Top tips for interview success

TAFE Queensland

If you have carefully prepared and practised, and remember most (or even some) of these strategies, you can relax – you've got this.

Interviews can be scary but there are plenty of things you can do to make sure you ace it on the day.

  • Do your research and write some notes on a copy of your resume and application. Take this with you on the day – with a quick glance you’ll be able to refresh your memory to nail your answer.

  • You might also want to take a notebook or some paper to an interview to jot down notes and points during your interview (for example in a double-barrelled question). Don’t forget a pen too!

  • Think about your answers and take your time to answer questions. It's better to give a thoughtful and concise answer than to rush or ramble. Never answer with just yes or no – always give details.

  • Listen carefully to the questions and ask them to repeat or clarify anything you don't understand.

  • If you are asked a question like "How would you....", say what you would do and if you’re able to provide an example of a similar situation you've experienced with positive outcomes that are even better.

  • Market and sell yourself. Clearly, they need to hire someone if they've advertised a job and you're at an interview, tell them why you're the best person for the position.

  • Act confidently and positively. Be enthusiastic about what you have to offer.

  • If possible, visit the interview location beforehand noting things like travel time and available parking. Make sure you leave enough time to arrive early (to calm your nerves). If you’re doing your interview via phone or Zoom, test the technology beforehand and make sure you have a quiet area to do the interview in.
